In April 2025, IBM i 7.6 was recently announced and is the first new release of the operating system in 3 years.

While version 7.6 brings a range of enhancements, arguably the biggest new feature is the addition of the multi-factor authentication directly into the operating system, which will make adopting MFA simple and represent a massive security improvements at no additional cost to IBM i shops.

It also brings significant enhancements to Navigator for i, part of the IBM i 7.6 and 7.5 releases, including a new dashboard for license management. This feature helps administrators track license expiration with visual alerts, supporting IBM’s shit to subscription-based licensing. Additionally, a new firmware card on the system status pages offers clearer visibility into firmware levels across managed LPARs.
